Migration from The Raiser’s Edge to Salesforce

For 90 years, Regional Plan Association has been an indispensable source of ideas and plans for policy makers and opinion shapers across the tri-state region.

RPA is America’s oldest independent urban research and advocacy organization. RPA works to improve the prosperity, infrastructure, sustainability and quality of life of the New York-New Jersey-Connecticut metropolitan region. Some of the region’s most significant public works, economic development and open space projects have their roots in RPA ideas and initiatives, from the location of the George Washington Bridge to the revitalization of downtown Brooklyn, Stamford and Newark to the preservation of open space and development of parks in the Palisades, Governors Island and Gateway National Recreation Area.

Challenges

  • RPA was using Blackbaud’s Raiser’s Edge, a server based application. It was not integrated with the organization’s online presence and was difficult to work with.
  • Being an older organization, they had an extensive database. Over 90,000 constituents and 250,000 donations, mostly grants and major gifts.
  • Reports weren’t fitting the organization’s needs and frequently timed out due to so much unorganized information.

Solutions

After extensive research, Cloud for Good was selected to complete the organizations conversion to Salesforce. “Cloud for Good was the most cost effective organization we found. They seemed to understand our needs and they offered a working product that moves data specifically from Raiser’s Edge to Salesforce,” said Rossana Ivanova, Director of Development.

Their consultant first began the arduous task of restructuring the data into Salesforce. The Cloud for Good Fundraising Package and custom fields were added to give flexible access to data as needed. The extensive use of attributes in the legacy software was recreated in Salesforce to preserve all aspect of each original record, including events and where contacts originated. Click and Pledge was added to handle online donations.

Results

Since the move from Raiser’s Edge, the organization now has data that is faster and yields better detailed reports. “Salesforce has a great amount of natural functionality but Amber, our consultant, did a fantastic job creating custom fields which allow for smooth, flexible reporting and workable data.” Ms. Ivanova added: “We are now able to access real-time data and reports across all three locations in a program that can continue to grow with our organization. Cloud for Good was wonderful to work with. I highly recommend them and I look forward to working with them on future projects.”
